Terrace Story is a novel about how all spaces are larger than they appear, and how people are always larger on the inside than we can possibly see or imagine. When I was thinking about how to prepare for launching this book, I asked myself, “How can I make the book somehow larger than the book you hold in your hands?” So I wrote a new short story, collaged from lines, sentences, and phrases that were deleted from earlier drafts. The story is called “Alcove,” and it will never be published. There are only 250 signed and numbered copies in print. You can find an Alcove at certain events on my tour, and hidden in bookstores around the country, like little terraces made of language, tucked in select copies.
Thank you to Sunset Push for the beautiful letterpress broadsides, and thank you—forever and ever—to indie bookstores.
